Nicoya (Costa Rica)

Nicoya is the region of Central America where residents have the world’s lowest rate of middle-age mortality and the second highest concentration of male centenarians.

Blue Zone residents avoid processed food but Nicoyans take it even further. Costa Ricans get the majority of their caloric intake from beans, squash and corn, plus tropical fruits. This plant-forward, nutrient-dense diet- and plenty of time outdoors gives them strong, well-nourished bodies.

Their longevity secret lies in their strong faith communities, and deep social networks as well as habits of regular, low-intensity physical exercise. They live a life of purpose, (a plan de vida), which helps Nicoyans stay mentally and spiritually fulfilled to age 90 and beyond.
